“As the deer pants for water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, ‘Where is your God?’” (Psalm 42:1-3)
Boy, this is a thirsty time of year. The heat and humidity combined with mowing and weed-eating and work in the garden and “Water, water, I need water!” Like a sand-crusted desert nomad, you crawl to the fridge and “gulp, gulp, gulp” an ice-cold bottle (or two) of refreshing H2O. “Oh man, that is so good…whew!” What a relief to fill a need like physical thirst!
• When sin or circumstance leads us into a spiritual desert?
• When we suddenly open our eyes and realize all is dry around us?
• When our most promising direction finds only more dryness?
• When that first stab of fear catches in our throat with a hard swallow?
• When desperation churns the feet to move, but where, where, where?
• When our heart, our very soul, panics to the point of panting?
• When we cry out, “God, where are You?”
Has God moved? Did the Rock of Ages relocate? No. We have moved away from Him. How do we get to the Fridge? How do we drink again from the fountain of water that springs up to eternal life? (John 4:13, 14) Shall we not pray and praise our way home?
“O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.
But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.” (Psalm 63)
Where are you today? In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water? Seek Him. Look for Him where He has always been. Praise Him. Bless Him. Remember Him. Meditate on Him. Rejoice in Him. Follow close behind Him. Take your rest in Him. Glory in Him. And drink deep.
