“Moreover you took your sons and daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter, that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?” (Ezekiel 16:20-21)
The nation of Israel, God’s chosen people, had a nasty habit of following after other gods. The Canaanites and Ammonites and Moabites and Baal worshipers loved to sacrifice babies and children to their little deities for supposed worldly favors. Most often mentioned was Moloch or Molech. This god’s statue (made by human hands of course) had outstretched arms where the child was placed. Then a fire burning within would cook the sacrifice. Drums were played to drown out the screams of the innocents so the parents could not hear them.
What uncivilized barbarians! Imagine such ignorance and disregard for human life! Isn’t that how you and I would respond when hearing of such a deliberate atrocity? And yet every day, day after day, about three thousand babies are tossed into our culture’s fire. Oh, we have it quite sanitized – a clinic, a physician, a thing we call a procedure – and a quiet thump (no drums required) as another human being is tossed into a medical waste basket. Nice and neat and tidy and still nothing but atrocious barbarism!
Last time we established from Scripture that Almighty God, the ultimate Source of life, knows and loves every human being even before He forms them in the womb. Each child is special and each child is unique to the point of never being duplicated. Yet we so callously sacrifice them to our gods of convenience, promiscuity and greed. And even worse than the vilest of heathens we cannot even wait until they are born to offer them up. Civilized, my foot!
The Canaanites, those Ammonites, the Moabites and Baal followers were just being themselves – lost and without God – but the Israelites, God’s people, what was their excuse? Our secular citizens and their law-of-the-jungle mentality are just being themselves – but Christians, God’s people, what’s our excuse? How many professing Christians see abortion as a justifiable means to an end?
What are we doing to His children, America…brethren? Has the blood of the innocents no voice but that of their Maker?
Life is so precious and it is no small matter to God that our culture, and even many in the church, so willingly cast it before the gods of the land to be devoured.
